The Land of the Great Migration

Serengeti National Park, sprawling over 14,763 km2 (5,700 sq mi) in northern Tanzania, lies within Mara and Simiyu Regions, with vast virgin savanna covering 1,500,000 hectares (3,700,000 acres). Established in 1940, it's a treasure of untamed wilderness.

Famed for the world's largest animal migration, the Serengeti witnesses a staggering spectacle of 1.5 million blue wildebeest and 250,000 zebras, accompanied by Thomson's gazelle and eland herds. The park boasts Africa's biggest lion population. However, deforestation, population growth, and ranching pose threats to this natural wonder.

Serengeti National Park's diverse habitats support a wide range of wildlife, including endangered species like black rhinos, elephants, and cheetahs. Despite threats from infrastructure development and water scarcity, ongoing efforts aim to safeguard its outstanding universal values and preserve this natural treasure for future generations.

How to get there

Nyerere National Park can be reached by road safari from Dar es Salaam or Arusha. Road distances vary from 184 km to 230 km, depending on the entry gate. The journey typically takes around 6 hours for most gates. Road conditions can be rough, especially the last 75 km on a gravel road. Alternatively, daily scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar take under an hour to reach various airstrips in Nyerere.

Wildlife

Renowned as Tanzania's finest park, the Serengeti hosts vast buffalo herds, elegant giraffes, and various antelope species like eland, topi, kongoni, and impala year-round. The park's abundant wildlife ensures easy sightings of the three big cats, with lions often spotted feasting on their prey.
